WELCOME TO THE SILVER SEASON

Howdy folks! This is the start of our 25th season in Wrigleyville . And after a commish change and some turnover it's mostly the same old group of Curmudgeons playing make-believe baseball. We have several new owners with us this year . Welcome to svick39 , zsiegri , dajack87 and  blitziscomin . May the wind always be at your back.
This year on the WHIF we will have the season previews and weekly updates. Last year I had time to do mid season reports at the all star break. I think they went well and I have yet to decide wheather to do them this year. In the past we have had several guest reporters do power rankings and we still need a volunteer this year. So if your good with numbers or someone gave you a  groovy calculater for christmas. Let me know, and we will set you up with posting privleges.
This is the start of my 5th calendar year writing the WHIF. And while sometimes it feels like a chore. Most the time it is a joy to write. I hope I can continue to slog out posts and sometimes entertain . So break out a new bottle of blantons or whatever alcoholic beverage you have handy . Pour a glassfull and raise it to the sky.

May the errors be few and the homers be great. Only the W I S  Computer can tabulate your fate.
May your draft be great and the IFA's be many. I wish I could sign them for a handfull of Pennys.
Here we go again on a brand new season . Could the departure of Sordie bring civility and reason.
Heres to Hoopcoach our newest Commish. Did you know a Muskellunge is just a Big Fish.
Heres to the re-build of Mark and Rbedwell. Their teams play like crap, pardon the smell.
This game we play is tough and demanding. May your team at the end be the only one standing.

Merry Christmas to all,
Madmudoon

OLEMISS'S BLACK BEARS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPS

Even Black Bears have hangovers.

By: I. B Lyon
staff writer(Mad News Corp)

It came down to a butt puckering seventh game in the World Series. The Black Bears trotted out Damaso Gonzalez to pitch in the rubber match. The Bruins sent out Freddie Long who was 87% on short rest. Jackson made New Britain pay for that decision and tagged Freddie "Be" Long with 4 runs in the first inning. Thats all Olemiss's dominate pitching staff needed. They won the game 4-1 to win their first World Series.
The Black Bears players mobbed each other while the fans stormed the field. There were no goal posts to pull down but they did pull down Olemiss's slacks and exposed his Hello Kitty boxer shorts. It was total bedlam, with Liberal Democrats hugging Tea Party Republicans and Sordie was seen giving Mark a back tap bro hug. These sights may never be seen again in our world, let alone in the deep south.
After a Sparkling Wine celebration in the Jackson locker room I caught up to the owner of the Black Bears, Olemiss33. We shook hands and he motioned me to his office .After pouring bourbon in 2 jelly jars he handed me mine and with our jars held high he said. " She offered her honor and I honored her offer. All night long it was off her and on her." We clanked the jars and drank em down. He poured 2 more, and sat down behind a very large wooden desk with papers stacked high on both sides . I positioned my chair as to see between the stacks and asked my first question of Olemiss. What did you think of your teams regular season? He took a sip and replied. "I thought we finished about what was I thinking. I had us pegged for 103 wins, and we won 105. We were able to add some important pieces in-season, but it cost us some really good prospects." I nodded . Walt Henry and Gerald O'Neil were great pick-ups for the regular season run . Which player(s) in your opinion was instrumental in your playoff run to the championship?  I grabbed the bottle and re-filled our glasses while Olemiss replied. "Without a doubt, it was Justin Brantley. He hit .377 with 20 or so RBI's. Can't leave out Walt Henry, though. He went 3-1 with a 1.11 ERA in the postseason. We wouldn't have been where we were in the postseason without those two."
Just then two beautiful brunettes came in and started running their fingers through Olemiss's thinning hair,  I hurried my next question so not to be too distracted. In the Blog preview you wrote . "However, the prize pickup for the Black Bears was a trade made to acquire 3 time AS Jumbo MacFarlane ." How did he do for the Black Bears.? Olemiss removed his face from between 2 breasts and said. "Well, he missed half the season with an injury. When healthy, he was dynamite with a 9-4 record and 2.34 ERA. HE didn't pitch much in the playoffs, because quite frankly, he wasn't one of my top 3 SP's." Yes sometimes it's hit and miss with off-season signings. What do you think of next years chances of a re-peat?  Olemiss answered while  pouring bourbon in the navel of one of the beauties and lapping it it up feverishly. "Well, we return basically everyone, so I would like to think (slurp) barring a lot of injuries, we should be one of the favorites. Our entire rotation (Slurp,Smack) and bullpen return from a team that led the league in pitching by over .3 of a point. We had some guys that should be much better offensively than they were this year. I would be floored (Slurp) if we don't hit .25 points higher as a team next year ."
I can see that my time is running short, so one last question for the WHIF readers. Would you like to say anything else to the Black Bear fans and team owners?  With his hair in disarray and a lipstick covered face, he touted. "Thanks for the support. We built a winner over years, as this place was a disaster when we took it over. It took two years just to get rid of terrible contracts, but after that, we built this team while still be somewhat competitive at the ML level. We never tanked a season to get higher picks. Season 17-18 we still had terrible contracts, but once those were gone, we fielded a competitive ML team, even spending very little on salary." With that the clothes started to fly and I headed for the door when the Hello Kitty boxers flew by.
Well readers it looks like the Black Bears are gonna be a force to rekon with for many years. Olemiss is a savy owner with a passion for baseball, and he is a asset to the league. Hello Kitty my foot. Hello Black Bears Dynasty!!

MWR Results!!

Okay, here it is, the moment we have all been waiting for! The votes have been tallied, and the winner with 11 votes out of 20 votes is OPTION 1. Meaning our new MWR rule beginning at the start of next season is:

Minimum wins requirement of 55. If a team fails to win 55 games in a season, the next season they must win at east 60 games. If you don't hit MWR, you may make your case to the league if you wish to stay, and your removal will be subject to a majority league vote.

Here was the voting breakdown: and I believe you'll like what you'll see.

Option 1: 11 votes- Hoopcoach07, wishlist3677, dmann2158, jmuhtoff, dodgersgale, mark3313, rbedwell, tchagnon, rugby1, sandberg10, pbsilver11

Option 2: 2 votes- swishnev23, jeff2106

Option 3: 3 votes- ressda, pat007ohmss, madmuldoon

Option 4: 3 votes- hatton98, olemiss33, wylie75

1 write-in vote from mdymond: 55 wins in year 1, 120 wins in year 2, and 189 wins in year 3.

THANK YOU to everyone! From voting, to suggestions, to working towards a soultion. Thank you to the advisory committee for working and doing research to get the options up and to anyone who made a suggestion to help them on their way. As I said on the chat, if you're still on the fence for coming back next year, give the league one more chance. We had 23 seasons of great success and little to no drama. We had almost no rules, and are srill trying to keep the rules at a bare minimum. Next year looks better already, and the drama looks to be in the past. So, I ask you to give us another year.

MWR Vote

Hey all, the time has come to vote on what the MWR rule will be moving forward. This rule will be put into effect at the start of season 25. Below are the 4 options the the advisory committee has come up with.

The way the vote will work is simply which ever option has the most votes will become our new MWR rule. Please send your vote to me through trade chat or site mail. At the conclusion of the vote I will post what everyone voted on the blog.

If you are not planning to return next season I would ask that you abstain from voting. We can not make you not vote, but it would be in the leagues best interest to only have owners who plan to move on with us or are currently on the fence vote on this rule.

The deadline to get your vote in is: Wednesday, December 4th at 11:00pm eastern standard time. Please trace chat or site mail me your vote by then.

Regardless of which option becomes rule: If you don't hit MWR, you may make your case to the league if you wish to stay, and your removal will be subject to a majority league vote.

(I would suggest taking a look at Sandbergs research which I posted below. Gives a good look at where the lowest amount of wins were by season)

Here are the options for MWR (please vote for only 1):

Option #1: 55 MWR. If a team fails to win 55 games in a season, the next season they must win at least 60 games.

Option #2: 125 MWR over the course of 2 seasons (62.5 average).

Option #3: A team can not win less than 60 games in 2 consecutive seasons.

Option #4: 195 MWR over the course of 3 consecutive seasons (65 average)

Sandberg's research on MWR and league history.

I'm bored and did some research for everyone:

If we go with a 2 year, 125 MWR there would have been 37 different violations since this world began (one team had a 91 win season and still would have violated this rule). 8 teams would have been in violation for a third year if that third year was 187.5 MWR or more, and 5 teams would have been in violation for a fourth year with a MWR of 250 or above. One team would have been in a fifth year violation at the same rate to a 312.5 MWR.

Since season 1 there have been 82 times that a team won 62 or fewer games (That's a .383 win percentage, .133 percentage points higher than WiS' requirement), meaning that they would be required to improve or be in danger of being kicked out of the league the next season.

With a MWR of 55, 19 teams would have been in violation since season 1. If we had a 2 year MWR of 110 there would only have been 3 violations to date, and just 1 with a MWR of 165.

I believe that the 3 teams that failed to reach 110 wins over two season were in clear violation of tanking, same goes for the 3 that didn't make

Personally I don't want to have to make a case for why my team sucks, which I would have once if a MWR of 125 over two years was in place since season 1. I don't want to lose my team because people voted me out because my case wasn't strong enough.

Six times since 1973 has a MLB team had a 54-108 or worse record, 42 times has a team gone 62-100 or worse. If MLB had a MWR of 125 over two years, the Detroit Tigers would have been kicked out in 2003 for only having 98 wins. The Royals after 2005 with 114 and again after 2006 with 118. The Padres in 1974 with 120, Blue Jays in 1978 with 113 and in 1979 with 112, and the Nationals in 2009 with 118 wins.

Again I point to the 55 win seasons as those that would be legitimately in question of a franchise tanking to save money to spend elsewhere or to get a #1 overall pick.

If you wanted to institute a MWR of 60 for a team that was below the 55 win mark the previous season, that would be the most I'd be willing to vote in favor of. Not a single MLB team failed this task including the 2003, 43 win Tigers who won 72 games the next season for 115 over the two year period.

6 Wrigleyville teams would have violated a 55/60 MWR. I think these are the teams we want to discourage.

There WiS floor should also be strictly enforced so that a team can't go 30-132 between 90+ win seasons.

MWR update.

At this point the committee is the best avenue. There are too many people leaving to have the league vote. I'm all for having the league ratify the decision made by the committee at the beginning of next season when we have members that are actually staying. The reason I decided to put in this AC was because we've tried to vote as a league before and things all went to hell. At this point we need to get a MWR in place so people can decide on if they are coming back. We're trying to get through this season, lose as few owners as possible and hopefully next season will be a breathe of fresh air.

I've been getting the email of the discussions from the AC on this issue and they are putting in A LOT of work and research. Sandberg has gone back and looked at every season of Wrigleyville and put together a GREAT piece that is helping guide ideas which I will post on the blog shortly. The last thing I want people to think is the AC controls all, I don't want anyone to think they don't have input. It's just at this point since it is so late in our season and we're at such a critical point in terms of owners staying or leaving, that the quickest and best way to get a rule in place is through the AC. I honesty think you all will appreciate the work they are putting in. The rule will not make every happy because that is impossible. Hopefully though everyone will come to accept it and appreciate that it is in the best interest of the league. If the rule needs to be tweaked then once we roll over we can have that discussion. But we need something in place going forward to help stop tanking.

Wrigleyville Advisory Committee

Hey guys, I have officially put together the 7 member advisory committee. I tried to choose owners who have been in the league for some time, owners who have had different levels of success, owners who have been active in the league and owners who have built teams through different means. The plan is to have advisory committee members serve for 2 seasons, and at the end of 2 seasons there will be opportunity for AC members to be replaced (Edit: Season 24 will not count as one of the two seasons since we are at the end of the season. These AC member's "term" will be for seasons 25&26). The process for doing so is yet to be determined but will be soon. I thought it was important to get the AC together first. The replacement process could be done by a vote, nominations, replaced by the commish or if a member steps down or leaves the league.

The 7 members are:

  • Swish
  • Pat
  • TC
  • Mad
  • Rugby
  • Sandberg
  • Jeff
I originally said it was going be a 6 member group, but I decided on 7 as to try and avoid ties in any votes they have. If for some reason there is a tie, I will break the tie.

The advisory committee's first order of business is to determine what the "Minimum Win Requirement" will be. The MWR is beginning at the start of next season, and it is my hope that we have a set standard by the end of the playoffs this season. My suggestion as of now to the committee is a minimum win total of 55 for 1 season and a total of 120 for two. I've had a discussion with rbedwell and he believes having a requirement for one season may not be necessary, and we only need 2. The reasons I suggest 55 for one season is to avoid having owners stash their ML talent in the minors for a season, lose a lot of games, get a high draft pick and in the following season bring everyone up and win 70+ games to meet the 2 season requirement.

Suggestions for what the MWR can be made by anyone in the league. Feel free to post on the chat or send suggestions through trade chat to myself or any of the AC members. From there the AC will narrow it done to what they think is best and if they aren't in total agreement on one standard they will vote.

Anyone not meeting the MWR will be subject to being expelled from the league. However, I know there are times MWR won't be met even as an owner tries as hard as they can to get wins. I've been there. That is why you can appeal the decision if you don't meet the MWR, and you will state your case not only to the league but more importantly to the AC. To be expelled from the league it will require the AC vote and confirm the expulsion after the owner has had a chance to state their case.

For the AC to come to a decision through a vote, the choice with the most votes from the AC will be their decision. In other words, the majority doesn't have to be 60% or 75%. In most case there will be two choices for the AC to vote on. 4 votes out of the 7 will be enough.

My hope is whatever is decided as the standard for the MWR will be the simplest possible. I'm not looking to make the league complicated or drastically change how you run your team. Just trying to keep things fair and drama free.

That is all for now. Thank you for your time. Thank you to the advisory committee members for accepting this role. And good luck to all those in the playoffs (unless you're playing Salt Lake!)

***If you have a suggestion for the MWR please get it to me, an AC member or post on the chat asap, so they can go to work***

THE WEEK IN WRIGLEYVILLE SEASON 24 #7

TRADES

No Trades This Week.

M L INJURIES

Luis Cortes
The Human Boy Toy, Luis "Es" Cortes is back on the DL. This time it's a strained hammy. He is already back in CF for Cheyenne where he is a liability. Play Nice with Es Cortes and put him in LF where his negative plays will stop.

Harry Johnson
This guy needs no nickname.LOL. Harry Johnson is well.....The great unshaved tool of Wrigleyville. And he will miss a month with shoulder problems. Dodger will issue Harry Johnson a Hair Net Jock Strap when he returns to duty. Meanwhile he will be staring in the reality show "Dick Dynasty"

Dom Woods
Dom "Back" Woods needs to be turned around. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and should heal in 2 weeks. Hacker put him on the 60 day DL so he could have some extra time to get his mojo Back. Time to move forward, Back Woods!

Joaquin Pena
Joaquin "Sub" Pena has been served with elbow tendinitis. Sub Pena will miss the rest of the season. This is not what Jeff had in mind when he picked this guy up in free agency. Jeff should sue to get some money back!

Adam Hamilton
Adam "Ant" Hamilton is on the DL for a second time this year. This time he dislocated his bum shoulder and will be out 2 weeks. Jmas might want to watch where he steps with this guy. He seems to be brittle.

Esmerling Sanchez
Esmerling "Peanutbutter and Jelly" Sanchez will miss 2 weeks with back spasms. Maybe Jmas can trade him for a juicebox??

Wayne Barclay
Hoopcoach picked this guy up in the R-5 draft. Now Wayne "Crow" Barclay will miss the playoffs with a hernia. He was nothing to crow about with a 1.55 WHIP and a ERA of 5.30.

THE WEEK IN WRIGLEYVILLE SEASON 24 #6

TRADES

The AUSTIN CITY LIMITS traded B.C. Alomar to the ARIZONA COBRAS for Craig Dodd and 2,500,000
Austin picks up a GG short stop with a expiring contract. He should help the City Limits while Ruffin the Passer (see below in the DL list) is on the DL. And he is playing on the Cobras dime which is always nice. Arizona keeps adding pieces for the future. They pick up a good young bullpen pitcher starting to hit his prime.

The TAMPA BAY STARS traded Paul Shibata to the COLORADO SPRINGS BANDITS for Tori Miller
We have 2 teams looking to next season and the needs for their respective  futures. The Bandits pick up a good bat that will be in Arbitration next year. He will give them about 20-30 homers every year. This could be trouble for SLC and myself next year. The Stars get a very good starting pitcher prospect. This kid has a couple more years to reach his lofty projections. If he does he could be a great ace for jmas's team.

M L INJURIES

Santos Mieses
Santos "It's all about" Mieses will miss the rest of the year, and then some, after he hurt his neck. He doesn't care about the Stars and I'm sure Jmas doesn't give a shit about him either. The question is: will any body give a flying fudge about him in free agency next year. It's not about the Mieses, It's all about the money!!

Jerome Cochrane
Jerome "Swinging" Cochrane  is already back on the mound and showing off to the ladies. He missed 2 weeks with a bruised Knee.. This sometimes can happen when you swing your Cochrane to hard.  I Know!

Ollie Greenwood
I lost Ollie "It's not easy being" Greenwood for 2 weeks with a pulled hammy. It's wasn't going to be easy to hold off  Salt lake City with Ollie out. But my guys held their own and now we have our prize CF'er back.

Nick McConnell
Nick "at Night" McConnell will be out 8 months with a torn hammy. With a health rating in the 20's, it's time to say goodnight to the up all night Misfit.

Howard Ruffin
Howard Ruffin "the Passer" is out for 7 months with shoulder surgery. Talk about a personal foul. The hits just keep coming for Wylie!

Gary Stern
Gary "Cis" Stern has sprung yet another leak. He will miss a month this time with a MCL strain. Wish may just say "piss on it!"

THE WEEK IN WRIGLEYVILLE SEASON 24 #5

TRADES

The ARIZONA COBRAS traded Mule Crawford and 1,000,000 to the RICHMOND REVOLUTIONARIES for Bob English and Dustan Hansen
It looks like the "Sinking Ship Sale" has taken a turn. Swish has decided to tow the ship out to the reef and scuttle it. He is in a full re-build mode and will be looking for prospects. Mule was brought in in the off-season from the Black Bears to round out the rotation. Now he will try and help Richmond make the playoffs. Swish recieved 2 prospects ,English will hit well and has speed to go with the power. Hansen will make a good set-up/closer if he stays healthy.

The HELENA BARKING MOONBATS traded Jack Shave and 1,000,000 to the SCOTTSDALE SCHIZOIDS for Odalis Colome and Hector Gonzales
Sordie sent me a offer I could not refuse.I had  Louie Yoon playing RF and he has been good. But he's young and I don't want to overplay him(Stamina of 69). Shave allows me to bring him along slowly and he is a up-grade defensivly. It cost me a couple pitchers that were stashed in AAA for emergency. I realize I have just few seasons before Mark is through with his re-build. I'm in a win now mode!!

M L INJURIES

Russ Porter
Russ "Trans" Porter is still Transitioning to the Majors after last seasons call-up. Just a little back pain for this future CF GG. I would like to Transfer him to my team. ;)

Jeremy George
Doesn't Jeremy "Bye" George realize the Bruins are trying to win. He is gonna miss 2 weeks with a strained hammy. I say old chap, bye, bye to George at the end of the year. Cheerio! Hip Hip!

Bob Neugebauer
Oh, what can you say about Bob "Nuegie" Neugebauer landing on the DL ....again. The stiff oblique will keep him out for 3 weeks. Now he can't perform his Nuegie Boogie routine at the redtail games.

Jeffrey Moreno
Jeffrey "The Giraffe" Moreno is not a tall man but he loves shopping at Toys for Us. He will have plenty of time to play with his toys now. His stiff groin will sideline him for 2 weeks. Play on Jeffrey, Play on.

Louis White
Dodger needs to hide the hookers from Louis 'Eggshell" White. He is becoming a DL darling with his penchant for injuries. Ever since that Juarez prostitute tore his groin in S-21. Well the docs couldn't put him back together right.

Carlos Bolivar
Carlos "Soup" Bolivar is gonna be on the DL for 2 months even though he'll be ready in one. He tore the miniscus in his knee. Ralph stares down at his empty soup bowl and says. "Please sir, I want some more" (Oliver Twist-Charles Dickens)

Wade Harris
Wade "A Minute" Harris will miss 2 weeks with a cramp. Wait a minute??? you mean this nancy has a cramp and can't play?? Wuss!!
